A healthy Berwyn means investing in people, neighborhoods, and the environment to improve well-being for all residents. My parents instilled in me the importance of healthy living—including proper nutrition and regular exercise—values that continue to shape my vision. I believe in promoting physical activity and ensuring our city encourages a healthy lifestyle.
I would focus on three key areas:
● Aiding in Expanding Green Spaces & Tree Canopy – Trees improve air quality, reduce flooding, and provide shade. I support Berwyn’s Urban Forestry Management Plan and will advocate to secure funding for tree planting, especially in underserved areas. Additionally, I would support the Park District in ensuring that the city prioritizes better parks and green space, as Berwyn is lacking in this area relative to its population.
● Equitable Investment in Neighborhoods – Every resident deserves safe sidewalks, clean air, and access to green spaces. In my ward, I will advocate for fair resource distribution so that no community or group is overlooked.
● Community-Driven Decision-Making – I will introduce participatory budgeting in the 7th Ward, allowing residents to decide how funds are spent. This process can support health initiatives, tree planting, and green infrastructure projects. I will also pitch proposals that encourage physical activity and environmental improvements.
Un Berwyn saludable significa invertir en las personas, los vecindarios y el medio ambiente para mejorar el bienestar de todos los residentes. Mis padres me inculcaron la importancia de un estilo de vida saludable, incluyendo una nutrición adecuada y ejercicio regular, valores que siguen dando forma a mi visión. Me enfocaría en tres áreas clave:

Q2: The City of Berwyn’s Urban Forestry Management Plan sets a goal of increasing tree canopy coverage from 20.91% (as of 2022) to 23% by 2032. If elected, what would you do to ensure this and other goals of the Plan are met?
There’s no question that tree loss has contributed to many of the environmental challenges we face today. Beyond adding beauty and cleaning the air, trees are a crucial carbon sink that helps slow the warming of our planet.
Locally, Berwyn’s tree canopy is essential for improving air quality, reducing flooding, and keeping our neighborhoods cooler. To meet the city’s goal, I would focus on community involvement, city support, and promoting awareness.
● Engaging Community Volunteers – I will work to spread awareness of this initiative and assist with tree planting efforts. This includes encouraging participation from residents, local schools, and community organizations, making tree planting a shared, citywide effort.
● Securing City Support & Resources – I will ensure the City Council is aware of the initiative and actively advocate for funding, partnerships, and resources to expand Berwyn’s tree canopy. If grants or state funding are available, I will work to prioritize those opportunities to support tree planting and maintenance.
● Promoting Awareness & Benefits – Even those skeptical of climate change can appreciate the practical benefits of having more trees. These include cooling homes in the summer, increasing property values, and reducing noise pollution.

Q3: Flooding is a big concern for many residents and with a warming climate we know to expect more extreme weather events. If elected, what would you do to decrease flooding and ensure our community is ready for a changing climate?
Flooding has long been a concern in Berwyn, especially as extreme weather events become more frequent. I have dealt with this firsthand—my home flooded the first week I moved here and several times afterward. My background in biology and environmental science has given me a strong understanding of how natural systems can mitigate these challenges.
While studying in Southwest Michigan, I took environmental science courses that included field trips to the Indiana Dunes, the “birthplace of ecology.” There, I learned the critical role that native plants and trees play in reducing erosion, absorbing excess water, and stabilizing ecosystems.
To address flooding in Berwyn, I would focus on natural solutions, infrastructure improvements, and community education:
● Expanding Native Tree & Plant Growth – Native species are highly effective at absorbing water and preventing soil erosion. I will work to incorporate more native trees and plants in flood-prone areas and promote green infrastructure solutions to help manage stormwater. I also have strong relationships with individuals in the parks department, which could lead to collaborative efforts in these initiatives.
● Advocating for Sustainable Drainage Improvements – I will push for investments in permeable surfaces, rain gardens, and better stormwater drainage systems to reduce standing water and prevent overflow during heavy rains.
● Engaging & Educating the Community – Residents play a key role in flood prevention. I will support education efforts on the benefits of native plants, rain barrels, and other small-scale solutions that homeowners can implement to reduce localized flooding.
Las inundaciones han sido una preocupación constante en Berwyn, especialmente a medida que los eventos climáticos extremos se vuelven más frecuentes.
