You may want to address people, neighborhoods, and the environment, as well as the role of equity, communication, and education and how you plan to respond to input from residents.
We can’t have a thriving and vibrant community if our neighbors, environment, and spaces are unhealthy. This means we need to center economic stability, education, access to high quality health care, open public spaces, affordable and quality housing, and healthy social norms.
What does that look like in Berwyn? Well, we need more walkable grocery stores or markets where residents can access fresh produce and healthy options. We need to support our food pantries and community fridges to make sure they are staffed and stocked for those who need access to quality food.
We need more activities for residents to engage in, so they can get outside, build connections and feel a sense of belonging while being active. This can happen on a block to block level, within neighborhoods or citywide. We need more green spaces where our neighbors can gather and enjoy nature. We also need walkable and bikeable infrastructure. This means bicycle lanes, more bike racks and innovative infrastructure like raised crosswalks that help make our neighborhood more walkable and safe.
At the city level, we need to update our ordinance on native plants to ensure that we are not prohibiting plants on the parkway that can help strengthen our local ecosystem. I would also want to see the City of Berwyn constitute a community led Environmental Commission that can propose new policies and initiatives to improve the health of our environment.
We also need a stronger community development plan. We need to do the work to welcome more community health services to our city and support the institutions that are already here doing critical work to provide quality healthcare to working class people.
If elected I will advocate for a healthy Berwyn and continue to leverage Participatory Budgeting to act on these opportunities with my neighbors.
No podemos tener una comunidad próspera y vibrante si nuestros vecinos, el medio ambiente y los espacios no están saludables. Q2: The City of Berwyn’s Urban Forestry Management Plan sets a goal of increasing tree canopy coverage from 20.91% (as of 2022) to 23% by 2032. If elected, what would you do to ensure this and other goals of the Plan are met?
Over the past several years, I have door knocked the 5th Ward to share information about how residents can obtain trees from the City of Berwyn and through the Berwyn Tree Canopy Initiative. I also have a 5th Ward website where residents can access city services. One of the services is tree planting. In partnership with BTCI and I Love Native Plants, I’ve held a Civic Series on the importance of green initiatives because I deeply care about our environment. I am committed to continue all of these strategies to advocate for the restoration of our tree canopy and if re-elected I will hold the City of Berwyn accountable to the current plan.
I would also like to see the City of Berwyn be more proactive with planting new trees after they are removed. We should not have to wait for over 5 years or request the tree ourselves. After a year or so passes and the arborist approves the space for planting, we should replace trees to ensure we are not falling behind.
If we want the tree canopy to grow we also need to make sure we are taking care of the trees we have now properly. I have heard way too many stories from residents about bad pruning techniques that severely damage the trees we already have in our community. We need to assess our current contractor and explore better options if they are not keeping our trees healthy and safe.

Q3: Flooding is a big concern for many residents and with a warming climate we know to expect more extreme weather events. If elected, what would you do to decrease flooding and ensure our community is ready for a changing climate?
It is important that we do our part on a local level to address and combat ever growing climate challenges and the extreme flooding we have experienced. I would like to see the City of Berwyn invest in green infrastructure like rain gardens, bioswales, more tree plantings, green roofs on city buildings and a rain barrel program. Our infrastructure needs to be replaced but in the meantime we need a plan to mitigate our issues with flooding and these strategies will also help our environment in the process.
I also think it is important that our community has a space to learn about these issues and share solutions with each other. I host a civic education program called the Civic Series and I commit to continuing to hold space to help spread awareness about these interventions so that more folks in the community can learn about them and get involved. I also believe that the City of Berwyn should partner with the Health District, School Districts and our Park Districts to put together a collective impact strategy around green infrastructure where all parties can work together to do their part for the health of our community. If elected, I will advocate for this level of collaboration and impact.
Es importante que hagamos nuestra parte a nivel local para abordar y combatir los crecientes desafíos climáticos y las inundaciones extremas que hemos experimentado. Me gustaría ver a la Ciudad de Berwyn invertir en infraestructura verde, como jardines de lluvia, bioswales, más árboles, techos verdes en los edificios de la ciudad y un programa de barriles de lluvia.
